Like most rural power district in Nebraska, Howard Greeley RPPD realizes a tremendous peak in energy usage during the months of June through September. A majority of this peak is due to crop irrigation and air conditioning. Energy costs during peak demand is the basis used in determining the majority of the cost of electricity purchased throughout the year for our customers. To help reduce the cost of this energy Howard Greeley RPPD has the capability to reduce this peak energy usage by controlling the load on the system with power line control devices installed on irrigation wells. At the District office a system operator monitors system load and has the ability to shut down controlled irrigation wells until a desired threshold is reached. This “load controlling” can take place any day of the week (including Sunday beginning in 2008) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. and is determined by the District’s power supplier, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD).
Irrigation customers are asked to sign up for the load control program which best suits their needs. The programs range from No Control to being controlled 7 days a week. Horsepower charges are determined by the specific program with No Control naturally being the most expensive. Contact the District or stop in the office to sign up your irrigation well.
